How to Actually Reduce Mosquitoes in Your Hampton Roads Yard

Hampton Roads has some of the worst mosquito pressure on the East Coast. The combination of coastal humidity, tidal wetlands, slow-draining soil, and warm temperatures that stretch well into fall creates ideal breeding conditions. Cities like Poquoson, Hampton, and Norfolk deal with mosquito pressure from April through October β€” sometimes later.

We get a lot of calls from homeowners who've tried everything β€” citronella candles, store-bought sprays, bug zappers β€” and are still getting eaten alive in their own backyard. Here's the honest breakdown of what works and what doesn't.

Eliminate Standing Water First β€” Every Time

This is the only mosquito control step that's universally agreed on, and for good reason: a single bottle cap of standing water can produce dozens of mosquitoes in a week. Go through your yard methodically. Turn over or store anything that holds water β€” flowerpots, tarps, buckets, wheelbarrows, kids' toys. Clean gutters that hold debris and standing water. Change birdbath water every two to three days. If you have a low spot in the yard that pools after rain, that area needs to be addressed β€” either graded, filled, or treated with a larvicide.

Trim Vegetation β€” Mosquitoes Rest There During the Day

The Asian Tiger Mosquito β€” the aggressive, day-biting species common throughout Hampton Roads β€” rests in dense vegetation during the heat of the day. Overgrown shrubs, tall grass along fence lines, and thick groundcover are all prime resting habitat. Keeping vegetation trimmed and open reduces the harborage available to them. When we do a professional mosquito treatment, vegetation is the primary target for exactly this reason.

What Doesn't Work

Bug zappers attract and kill moths, beetles, and other insects β€” but very few mosquitoes. Studies consistently show they're ineffective for mosquito control. Citronella candles and torches provide minimal protection in a small radius and are essentially useless in any outdoor space with a breeze. Ultrasonic repellers don't work β€” no credible study has ever shown they have any effect on mosquitoes. We mention these because homeowners spend real money on them, and we'd rather you spend that money on something that actually moves the needle.

When Professional Treatment Makes Sense

If you've eliminated standing water, trimmed your vegetation, and you're still dealing with heavy mosquito pressure β€” professional treatment is the next step. A professional mosquito service applies residual insecticide to the vegetation where mosquitoes rest, which provides knockdown within a day and protection that lasts two to four weeks. For Hampton Roads, where mosquito season runs five to six months, a monthly program from April through September or October is the approach that actually keeps pressure manageable.

We treat yards throughout Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, Virginia Beach, and the surrounding area. One treatment won't solve the problem for the whole season β€” mosquitoes don't work that way. But a consistent monthly program will turn your backyard from somewhere you avoid into somewhere you can actually use.

If you're in an area with nearby tidal marsh, wetlands, or retention ponds β€” Poquoson, Hampton, Ocean View, Sandbridge β€” you're dealing with a higher baseline pressure than inland neighborhoods. Those areas genuinely benefit from professional treatment because the breeding source is persistent and outside your control. You can't eliminate it, but you can manage what's resting and breeding in your own yard.
