How to Identify Bed Bugs
Adult bed bugs are about 1/4 inch long, oval, flat when unfed, and reddish-brown — they swell and turn darker red after a blood meal. Nymphs are smaller, paler, and harder to see. They don't fly and don't jump. Inspection sites: mattress seams and piping, box spring staple gaps, headboard crevices, behind picture frames near the bed, inside nightstand drawer tracks, and electrical outlet covers on shared walls. Signs beyond live bugs: rusty reddish-brown stains on bedding from crushed bugs, dark fecal spots (about the size of a pen tip) on mattress seams and headboards, shed exoskeletons at each life stage, and a sweet, musty, slightly offensive odor in heavy infestations.

Nightstands, headboards, baseboards, electrical outlets, picture frames, and carpet edges near the bed are all common harborage sites. In heavy infestations they spread further — into sofas, chairs, and adjacent rooms.

Heat treatment requires specialized equipment to reach the 120°F+ temperatures needed throughout the room. Effective chemical treatment requires licensed applicators using professional-grade products and multiple visits. DIY attempts most often delay effective treatment, giving the population time to grow and spread.
The most reliable confirmation is a positive ID of a live bug or shed skin under magnification. Bites alone are not diagnostic — many people don't react, and bite patterns vary. Carpet beetle larvae are frequently mistaken for bed bugs.
