Bed Bugs

Bed Bug Identification in Hampton Roads — What to Know Before You Call

Complete Pest Management has been treating Bed Bugs in Newport News and Hampton Roads since 1993. Licensed and insured in Virginia — VDACS #11694.

Bed bugs are one of the most stressful pest situations a homeowner can face — and one of the most misdiagnosed. They're not a sign of poor hygiene and they don't care how clean your home is. They travel in luggage, on used furniture, and through wall voids in multi-unit buildings. If you suspect bed bugs, accurate identification is critical before any treatment, because effective bed bug treatment is specialized and entirely different from general pest control.

How to Identify Bed Bugs

Adult bed bugs are about 1/4 inch long, oval, flat when unfed, and reddish-brown — they swell and turn darker red after a blood meal. Nymphs are smaller, paler, and harder to see. They don't fly and don't jump. Inspection sites: mattress seams and piping, box spring staple gaps, headboard crevices, behind picture frames near the bed, inside nightstand drawer tracks, and electrical outlet covers on shared walls. Signs beyond live bugs: rusty reddish-brown stains on bedding from crushed bugs, dark fecal spots (about the size of a pen tip) on mattress seams and headboards, shed exoskeletons at each life stage, and a sweet, musty, slightly offensive odor in heavy infestations.

Why Bed Bugs Are Common in Hampton Roads

Hampton Roads' large military population with frequent travel and PCS moves creates consistent bed bug introduction and spread. Motel, hotel, and short-term rental turnover in Virginia Beach's resort area is a transmission vector. Multi-unit housing in Norfolk, Newport News, and Hampton — apartments, barracks-adjacent housing, and older rental stock — allows spread through shared walls and common laundry facilities. The region's international port activity has historically made it a bed bug re-introduction point.
